Basic Sound System Troubleshooting

A sound system, also known as a public address or pa system, allows one person to communicate with an entire room, or an entire stadium while speaking at a normal conversational level. A sound system allows a presenter to speak for long periods of time without losing his or her voice. A sound system that has speakers in multiple rooms will allow a presenter's voice to be heard in more than one place at a time, which would be difficult, if not impossible otherwise.

Sound systems may be small battery operated portable units, or large line powered fixed installation systems. Many hotel, convention and meeting facilities have sound systems available, as part of the room rate or a as a separate fee. For meeting facilities that do not provide or offer sound systems, most cities have sound system rental companies, usually listed in the yellow pages under "sound systems and equipment-renting" or "audio-visual equipment-renting." A basic sound system consists of a microphone, an amplifier, a loudspeaker, and associated cables. Often a microphone is first connected to a mixer before being amplified. Mixers provide a larger number of microphone input channels, and offer more tone controls and signal routing flexibility then connecting a microphone directly to the typical sound system.

Basic Sound System Troubleshooting

The key thing to do if you are having trouble with a sound system is avoid panic, and to think in a logical, systematic way. This is because all sound systems are logical, from the microphone input to the loudspeaker output. If the system is not working properly, the problem is somewhere between the input and the output. Although electronic equipment failures do occur, the majority of sound system problems are due to improper setup or operator error. The following list of seven troubleshooting steps are very basic, can be quickly performed in seven minutes or less, and unfortunately in panic situations are often overlooked. By following these steps in order, a presenter will rapidly either uncover the source of sound system trouble, or eliminate all of the most common problems with sound systems.

Seven Basic Sound System Troubleshooting Steps

1. If system is battery powered, are the batteries ok?

2. If system is line powered, is the system plugged into AC power?

3. Is the system switched on?

4. Are the loudspeaker(s) connected?

5. Are the microphone(s) connected?

6. If a wireless mic is used, is the battery ok, and is it switched on?

7. Are the individual and master volume controls turned up?
