Audio Production
At one time audio production was done with relatively simple equipment with limited options, as this picture of me mixing on a 1960 Universal Audio console clearly shows. For those interested, this photo was taken at the “When Vinyl Ruled” Historical Exhibit at the 2000 Los Angeles AES Convention.
Today, options abound in terms of equipment and creative choices. Projects can be a combination of analog or digital sources, delivered in a stereo or multi-channel physical format or via a streaming server. A common denominator for any successful audio project is sound quality. Lacking that, your program or message will not be delivered effectively.
To present your material in the best possible light, I use the following project management steps for all of my audio production work. Please contact me if my experience and trained ears would be of assistance in the design and development of your next audio project.
Audio Project Management Steps
1. Client meeting to discuss nature of project
- Determine the program length
- Classify the program: voice over narration, mix of music, voice and sound effects, or music production, or other type
- Determine delivery format and time frame
2. Design the project
- Review or write a script
- Determine if outside talent or other services will be needed
- Determine if music will be licensed
3. Determine an appropriate budget for the scope of work
- Estimate project completion cost for time and materials
- Obtain fees and rates for any outside talent or services needed
- Obtain music licensing fees if needed
4. Develop the project
- Schedule any needed external talent or services
- Schedule recording sessions
5. Client review and delivery of the project
